preparing for pregnancy

Pregnancy begins with preparation. Do you want to get pregnant and prepare as well as possible for the journey ahead? We are here to help you.

A healthy pregnancy starts with things like taking folic acid. Preferably start four weeks before you can become pregnant, a month before you stop using contraceptives. Can’t get pregnant right away? Then just keep taking folic acid. You can safely continue taking folic acid for several months.

Also moderate your alcohol consumption in advance, as you often don’t know exactly when you will become pregnant.

Your partner's preparation

The woman is not the only one who can prepare for a healthy pregnancy. Research shows that the health of the partner (or sperm donor) also plays an important role in a healthy pregnancy. A man can contribute in various ways to a healthy pregnancy preparation, both for himself and for his partner. Here are some things he can do to prepare: (these tips are also helpful for the woman!)

1. Healthy Nutrition: Eating a balanced diet can improve health and support sperm quality.

2. Exercise: Regular physical activity promotes healthy circulation and can help improve fertility.

3. Smoking and Alcohol: Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can negatively affect sperm quality.

4. Weight: Both overweight and underweight can impact fertility.

Good sleep is crucial for maintaining hormonal balance and healthy sperm production. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night.

Chronic stress can affect fertility. It’s essential to reduce stress by incorporating relaxation techniques such as meditation, yoga, or breathing exercises.

Exposure to certain chemicals (such as pesticides, heavy metals, or industrial chemicals) can negatively impact fertility. It’s advisable to avoid contact with these substances both at work and in daily life.

The preconception consultation

You can sign up for our preconception consultation, possibly together with your partner. During this session, we will discuss the best ways to prepare for a healthy pregnancy.
We will send you a questionnaire, the ZwangerWijzer, to fill out beforehand. You can download the results and send them to praktijk@anticonceptie-weesp.nl.
During the consultation, we will go through the questionnaire together. Based on this, we will provide you with appropriate tips and advice regarding your lifestyle and, if necessary, medication use. Because the healthier you start your pregnancy, the better.
